Kigali’s involvement in the 11th Zone 5 Inter Cities championships remains a doubt, Times Sport has learnt. Over fifteen cities have already confirmed participation in the championships slated for March 24-28 in Arusha.

However, Albert Mwanafunzi, an official in Kigali City Council yesterday revealed that the city had not received any formal invitation for the championship.

"We have not received any formal invitation for the championship,” he said.

Cities gearing up for the festival include Nairobi, Mombasa (Kenya), Kampala, Jinja, Entebbe (Uganda) Dar es Salaam, Mbeya Tanga, Mwanza (Tanzania), Zanzibar and the host Arusha.

Meanwhile, Mogadishu, Harare, Johannesburg and Lusaka are also set to make debut appearances in the event which has in the past been an East African affair.

Should all these cities turn up, this year’s championship will down as the most contested in the championship’s 10-year history.

With less than two weeks to the event, Agina Wesonga, the Inter Cities committee executive officer has told FIBA Africa that renovation work on the courts is winding up.

"The re-carpeting of the three courts has started and things are expected to move fast,” he said.
