KIGALI - The Ministry of Infrastructure recently accepted a proposal by TPS Consultants, a firm based in the United Kingdom, to continue with renovations of the passenger terminal at Kigali International Airport (KIA).

This was disclosed, Monday, by the Minister of Infrastructure, Eng Linda Bihire, during an interview, in which she explained that the project would be carried out in four phases.  

She said that government chose to upgrade the airport in Kanombe, for it  to be able to accommodate increasing air and passenger traffic, as the country pursues its development agenda.

According to the Minister, the improvement of the terminal will facilitate provision of cost effective, sustainable and appealing solutions, in tackling current challenges at the terminal.

She explained that as the major gateway connecting Rwanda to the rest of the world, Kigali International Airport should be modified to be able to provide quality services.

"Despite the fact that the airport is capable of handling the current air and passenger traffic, the issue of the Airport terminal functionality must be addressed,” she said.

Bihire underscored that the current airport has insufficient capacity to accommodate the projected tremendous increase in air traffic.
