Riek Machar, the Vice President of South Sudan tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, his office announced in a statement.

In a public statement, the statement said Machar's wife Angelina Tang, who also serves as the country’s defense minister, also tested positive for the virus.

The vice president will self-quarantine for two weeks, the statement reads in part.

Additionally, even though they were no official statistics indicated, some office workers and bodyguards also tested positive according to media reports from the East African Community member state.

Machar is also the head of the national response to COVID-19 in South Sudan.

This comes after South Sudan has 290 confirmed cases while four patients have succumbed to the pandemic.

The country has also reported for recoveries and patients have been discharged.

Globally, the virus has been diagnosed in more than 4.8 million people and killed more than 318,000.
