TEHRAN, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Nineteen Iranian navy servicemen were killed following an incident in the Iranian Army's Konarak logistic vessel in the country's waters near the port of Jask in the Sea of Oman, official IRNA agency reported on Monday.

The incident happened during a naval exercise on Sunday evening. Fifteen others were injured. Konarak has been towed to the port for further technical investigations, according to the report.

Unofficial local media reports said that Konarak was hit by "friendly fire," as the frigate Jamaran was testing a new anti-ship missile which locked onto and hit Konarak.

According to an army statement, the incident is under investigation and further details will be announced shortly.
