The measures to curb the spread of the new coronavirus have ensured that nearly everything is turned off to focus on dealing with the virus, but creativity in some artistes is still alive and stronger than before.

One good example is the Afro-pop artiste Martin Maniraruta, popularly known as Mani Martin. The artiste has in recent days proved to be busy, joining a group of artistes to release a song against COVID-19 and now releasing his brand new song titled ‘Amahwemo’.

According to "Afro” singer, his new single is a love song that tells a story of a young man who fell in love with a girl he met once and it was love at first sight.

The afro-pop artiste said due to the new coronavirus outbreak, many people including artistes are going through the lockdown to prevent the virus from spreading, which means that most of the activities have been put on hold but one has to find a way of making the most of the period.

As it is, music concerts, festivals and tour events are all on hold as the country works around the clock to stop the spread, but artistes have found a way to keep their creativity going, something Mani Martin says is positive.

"In my view staying home does not only save our lives but it is also a moment to put ideas together for the next music projects we have since we have time to think and be creative,” he said.

The artiste said he has taken this opportunity to release one of his music videos that he shot a few days before the measures were announced.

His aim, he says, is for his fans to not only be updated, but also keep watching and listening to some of his new music while at home.

Mani Martin went on to add that coping with the situation without entertainment activities is not easy  for not only  the artistes but, all creatives, industry operators, promoters and the general public.

"As artistes and other groups of people, we only get paid after working or performing. So like all Rwandans we are just adjusting to the situation as it is, bearing in mind that no one is special or exceptional this time. This however does not stop us from being creative and making the most of our time,” he said.

Mani Martin urged his fans and Rwandans in general to stay home and adhere to government measures in order to save lives, save their families, country and save the world.

"I am reminding all of us to follow all recommended guidelines from the government to prevent the virus. Just make sure you are not going to be the reason why the whole community would remain in lockdown forever...play your part,” he urged.

Future plans

Asked about his future plans after the situation is normalised, Mani Martin said he had never thought such a thing would happen in the first place, and so during or after, his aim will always be to share good music with his fans and continue to encourage people.
