Music icon Kayirebwa to be honoured at cultural concert

Legendary musician Cécile Kayirebwa is set to be honoured at the forthcoming cultural concert for her contribution to the music industry and for preserving the Rwandan culture and traditions.

On March 8, at Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village, Kayirebwa will be recognised for her impact on the music industry as one of the legendary Rwandan traditional musicians, who have influenced a new generation of cultural artistes.

Dubbed, ‘Ikirenga mu Bahanzi’, event is organised by Bwiza Media, in collaboration with Kalibu ASBL—a Belgium-based events company.

Merchiore Kayiranga, the concert coordinator, said the idea to recognize musicians was initiated some time back and they started working on the project for over a year, and Kayirebwa became their first pick in the process.

"Artistes should be recognised while they are alive. Kayirebwa has spent decades dedicating her life to music, which played a crucial role in spreading Rwandan culture wherever she performed,” she said.

"We’re excited to be honouring her as one of the most iconic Rwanda musicians,” she added. 

Born in 1946, Kayirebwa has enjoyed tremendous home and international success, since started music in 1960s, and her music has been an instrumental tool to spread Rwandan culture in Rwanda and abroad. She writes songs that draw on the traditions of Rwandan tunes and storytelling. The music icon is famous for her great tunes including, Tarihinda, Cyusa, Umunezero, Marebe, Babyeyi,  Rwanda and Inyange, among many others.

The historic event will feature a lineup of popular Rwandan traditional artistes including, Mariya Yohana and Muyango. Also performing at the event are fast-rising cultural singers Jules Sentore, Clarisse Karasira, Mani Martin and Ibihame cultural troupe.

During the concert, a documentary about Kayirebwa’s successful music journey will be screened, featuring different people from Rwanda or the diaspora, sharing their inspirations from her music.

Organisers said the concert will not only celebrate renowned musicians, but will also inspire young artistes. The event is said to be an annual affair.

Entrance is Rwf5, 000 (regulars), Rwf10, 000 (VIP) and Rwf20, 000 (VVIP).
