The former Minister of State in charge of Primary and Secondary Education, Isaac Munyakazi is being investigated by Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) for corruption-related charges.

The announcement comes just hours after the office of Prime Minister confirmed receipt of Munyakazi’s resignation letter in a tweet that was posted on the official handle of the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday evening.

The ongoing investigation was confirmed by RIB spokesperson, Marie-Michelle Umuhoza, in an interview with The New Times on Friday, February 7.

"RIB have started investigating corruption allegations against former minister as stipulated by law n° 54/2018 on fighting against corruption,” she disclosed.

The spokesperson however did not reveal details as the investigation is ongoing.

According to media reports, former minister Munyakazi allegedly compromised best performing school rankings in 2019 national exams. It was reported that a school that was initially ranked in top 100, corrupted its way to top 10 best schools in the country, with the connivance of Munyakazi.

Munyakazi has been in charge of Primary and Secondary Education since 2016. He has a doctorate in Education Management. He joined the education ministry after working as a lecturer and Dean of the Faculty of Business Management and Economics in the University of Kigali in 2013.   

The former minister’s letter of resignation was announced along with that of Evode Uwizeyimana, the former Minister of State in charge of Constitutional and Legal Affairs.

Uwizeyimana is also under investigation for an assault committed to a female security officer at a shopping mall after he was asked to undergo a security check as required prior to entry of public buildings in Kigali.

Uwizeyimana who holds a Master’s degree in Law, has since apologized to the officer and to the general public after backlash on social media regarding the incident.

Before Uwizeyimana joined the ministry in 2016, he served as Commissioner in Rwanda Law Reform Commission.
