Holders APR have edged closer to retaining the Ubutwari Cup title after beating Police 1-0 on Tuesday night at Kigali Stadium.

Striker Innocent Nshuti scored the lone goal in the 53rd minute.

It was the army side’s second win in as many games in the four-team tournament having started their title defence with a 3-1 victory over Mukura last Saturday.

In another match on Tuesday, Mukura lost 4-2 to SC Kiyovu, making it the Huye-based outfit’s second defeat, while Kiyovu bounced back after losing their opener 2-1 to Police.

Martin Twizerimana scored a brace, with Robert Saba and Jean Claude Nzeyimana completing the rout while Bertrand Iradukunda and Innocent Ndizeye scored the two goals for Mukura.

APR lead the standings with a maximum six points, SC Kiyovu and Police are second and third, respectively, with three points each while Mukura are bottom without a single point.

Mohamed Adil Erradi’s APR will only need a draw against SC Kiyovu in their final game on Saturday, February 1, to retain their title. The tournament is ordained at honouring the Rwandan Heroes.

February 1 is designated as the National Heroes Day, an annual event to pay tribute to people who exemplified and defended the highest values of patriotism and sacrifice for the wellbeing of Rwanda and her citizens.
