Ernest Sugira, seen here appreciating the fans at Kigali Stadium after the match, was loaned to Rayon Sports by APR last week.

Centre forward Ernest Sugira has said that he was happy to score on his debut appearance for Rayon Sports as his lone goal sank Gasogi United on match-day 16 of the 2019/2020 Rwanda Premier League over the weekend.

The APR striker, who was loaned to Rayon last week, came on as a halftime substitute and it would only take him 10 minutes before slotting home the goal that earned the Blues the three points at Kigali Stadium.

Sugira, 28, told fans afterwards that they should expect more as he returns to peak fitness and scoring rhythm following his two-month suspension at APR.

"I was not expecting to play such a big role, but the coach trusted me and all I had to do was to try all I could. I played well, and even scored the only goal of the match. It was surreal,” Sugira told reporters in a post-match interview.

"It was a good start, and the fans should expect more. I had been out of action for a while, but slowly I am regaining match fitness and confidence. I was delighted to introduce myself to the club that way,” added the former AS Muhanga and AS Kigali frontman.

Before his stunning header against Gasogi, Sugira had not scored in the league since January 6, 2019, during APR’s 2-1 win over his old club – AS Muhanga.

With the hard fought win, Rayon moved back to second with 34 points, four adrift of unbeaten leaders APR and one ahead of third-placed Police. Mukura complete top four with 25 points.
