Major Showbiz highlights to expect in 2020

The year 2020 marks the beginning of a new decade. For the entertainment world, event promoters and organisers have already given us a sneak peek into some the major events that Rwandans should look out for.

From international celebrities visiting Rwanda or gracing our stages, to major career changes among our local artistes, we bring you some the key highlights in entertainment to expect this year.

Miss Rwanda 2020

This annual national pageant is arguably one of the most controversial events and cause for debate, as many deem its rules unfair and unrealistic to the Rwandan context.

Although it is not new, it is highly anticipated given some of the changes made for this year’s edition, most notably the use of any official language in Rwanda. As auditions are ongoing countrywide, many will be waiting to see if the changes will be any better and fairer to the contestants.

Malawi’s Daliso to grace Seka Live

Seka Live’s creator and organizer, Arthur Nkusi just recently announced that this month’s edition will feature Malawian stand-up comedian, Daliso Chaponda. Chaponda is famous for his appearance at Britain’s Got Talent auditions. He had the audience in stitches on Britain's Got Talent that Amanda awarded him the prestigious golden buzzer and beat off stiff competition from Jamie Lee Harrison and Lords of Strut to secure a place in the final. He will be performing in Kigali on January 26.

Kim Kardashian in Kigali

American media personality, model, businesswoman, socialite, actress and wife to American rapper Kanye west, Kimberly Noel Kardashian is expected in Rwanda sometime this year. She will be here for the inauguration of Marasa Umubano Hotel, Umubano Hotel. Kardashian is famous on Twitter with 155 million followers.

Riderman to quit music

Emery Gatsinzi, known to many as Ridermana is one of the famous hip hop stars Rwanda has had the last ten years, having won several awards including Primus Guma Superstar season 3 with a 24 million prize.

Two years ago however, the 34-year-old confirmed to one of the local media house in Rwanda that he would be retiring in 2020. His announcement did not go well with his fans who are fond of his music.

The Ibisumizi "General”, as he calls himself, is expected to launch his album dubbed "Kimirantare” this year between January and March. It is then that he will clarify his announcement.

Safi Madiba could shift Canada

The former Urban Boys’ member, a few years ago married the love of his life, Judith Niyoyozera, a resident of Canada. As such, it is speculated that he is likely to relocate to Canada to live with his wife. Credible sources confirm that he has got all the travel documents and might head to Canada this year.

Recently Safi was recently dismissed from The Mane records, under accusations of violating the teams’ terms and conditions. He then took a decision to found his own "Ni ukuri” music label.

Bushali’s trial

Bushali, a local Rwandan rapper, was arrested on October 18, 2019 in Nyamirambo sector suspected of using Cocain drug. He was later on released on December 5, and immediately began performing at concerts, winning the hearts ofmany. His court sentencing this year will determine whether he will keep up with the performances or sent to jail.

Oda Paccy’s marriage

Oda Paccy Uzamberumwana has been single for a long time, following her divorce with Rwandan music producer, Lick Lick in 2011. She recently announced that she will be wedding by the end of 2020, but remains tightlipped about the details of her wedding and fiancée.

Dream Boys likely to split

The duo that was formed in 2009 has graced the airwaves with a number of songs in the last decade and won the Primus Guma Guma Superstar award in 2017.  Claude Mujyanama, also known as TMC last year graduated with a Master’s Degree in Project Management from The University of Rwanda. His counterpart Platini Nemeye will also be travelling abroad for his further studies, leaving Platini to take on music by himself.
