A man in Bugesera District who hacked his two twin children on Wednesday night was arrested, according to the Spokesperson of Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), Marie-Michelle Umuhoza.

Umuhoza confirmed this following reports that on a fateful night, the man, known as Faustin Ndayambaje of Kiruhura Village, Kagenge Cell, in Mayange Sector, attacked the infants – reportedly five years old – after a quarrel with his wife.

Umuhoza said the suspect is being held at the RIB station in Nyamata.

The suspect, she said, is being investigated for the crime of murder as set in article 107 of the law determining offences and penalties in general.

It stipulates that a person who intentionally kills another person commits murder.

Upon conviction, such a person is liable to life imprisonment.

The man is reported to have got home at night and started quarrelling with his wife.

The wife reportedly fled and the man turned on his young children, put them in a room and hacked them with a machete.

Neighbours reportedly intervened and rescued the kids who were seriously injured.

The children were taken to the hospital.

Umuhoza said that investigations are ongoing to establish the detail.

"We continue to condemn all forms of GBV, and appeal to everyone to do the same as well as always act quickly especially by sharing information,” she said.
