Blow for music fans as Fally Ipupa cancels Kigali New Year Countdown performance

The Kigali New Year Countdown concert has suffered a huge setback after DR Congo-born music star Fally Ipupa’s last-minute announcement that he would not be travelling to Kigali.

The concert that is co-organised by Rwanda Events Group and Radisson Blu, is an annual event held on New Year's Eve and also gives revellers an opportunity to watch the fireworks. 

The announcement comes at a time when supporters for the 42-year-old maestro were waiting on their wings to end the year enjoying his live performance in style.

The ‘A Flyé’ singer broke the news on Monday evening via his Twitter handle, leaving organisers in disappointment and with no clear option as to what they will do next to keep the end-of-year music entertainment at bay.

His fans in Bujumbura, Burundi and home supporters in Goma, DR Congo, were affected by the singer’s sudden cancellation of the regional tour.

"To all my fans in Kigali, Bujumbura and Goma, it is with great regret that I would like to announce that I will not be able to travel for all my previously announced concerts. New dates to be announced soon! Apologies for any inconvenience caused,” The singer tweeted on Monday night.

It is understood, according to a statement from the organisers, that the cancellation was triggered by the singer's health conditions.

"Mr. Ipupa’s management team informed us that he was hospitalized in Abidjan at 3pm this [Monday] afternoon. 

He communicated that he is committed to performing in Kigali at a later date, the details of which will be shared at the soonest opportunity ...we kindly appreciate your understanding and once again regret any inconvenience caused by this unanticipated postponement,” reads part of Rwanda Events’ statement.

The tickets, according to the statement, will remain valid until the singer announces new dates of his performance in Kigali. 

However, attendees have full right to get reimbursed in case they wish, according to the organisers.
