Rwanda’s representative at the ongoing Miss World pageant, Meghan Nimwiza made the country proud when she presented her project during the Head-to-Head challenge that took place yesterday, December 4.

The contestants, from all around the globe, were randomly divided into groups, where they had to compete against each other to secure a direct entry into the top 30.

Nimwiza was placed in group 17 together with representatives from Aruba, Philippines, Dominican Republic and Ghana—where they, like other groups, sat down with current Miss World Vanessa Ponce de Leon, who questioned them about their ‘beauty with a purpose’ campaigns.

Describing her ‘beauty with a purpose’ project, which seeks to involve more youth in agriculture, Nimwiza touched on the need for young people to venture into agriculture.

"Being born in a family that believes in community service, I was raised to become a community person and I believe in serving the society especially the vulnerable people around us. My father took to us the countryside where there were different farmers—and what shocked me the most is that I saw the same faces every day and no young person. Everybody was 50 years old and above and I was really moved.

When I grew up I realised it is something that is not given the most attention. I started thinking of 20 years ahead where people cannot go to farms anymore because young people still think it’s not a cool job but I think it's because our lives depend on it,” she said.

In addition to her project, the 20-year-old beauty queen expressed her desire to support children—mostly those dealing with malnutrition to help them attain a healthy and happy future.

After interviewing all the participants, fans were urged to vote for their favourite contestants via several social media platforms made available.

Running under the theme, ‘beauty with a purpose’, Miss World brings together women from around the world with a shared sense of purpose. Rwanda’s Nimwiza is competing for the crown with 129 other women from around the world in a three-week event and the Miss World final.

The pageants have been on their toes to maintain their position in the competition and win the Miss World 2019 for their respective countries. The main event, in its 69th edition, is all set to be held on December 14, in London, England—where the reigning Miss World 2018 Vanessa Ponce de Leon will crown her successor at the end of the event.
