LOCAL stand-up comedian Michael Sengazi has scooped Prix RFI Talent du Rire 2019, making him the first Rwandan comedian to win the title.

Speaking to The New Times this evening, November 22, Sengazi said he was grateful to his fans and family for supporting his career and the Rwandan comedy industry.

"I am so honoured for this award. This was my fourth attempt in the competition, and I finally made it as the first Rwandan comedian to win this competition,” said Sengazi.

He described the recognition as significant as it will pave way for the entry of local comedians onto the African scene and beyond. He added that this was also confirmation that local talent was rising.

Having become one of the most sought-after comedians in Rwanda, Sengazi, a member of Comedy Knights, seems to be on track in his dream to take comedy onto the international stage.

The awards ceremony will be held on December 7, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Sengazi is expected to receive 4,000 Euros (about Rwf4million).
