The cause of a fire accident that on Wednesday destroyed a section of a house in the Isangano village in Muhima Sector, in Kigali City, is still not known.

According to members of the Police Fire Fighters who arrived shortly after the incident, there is no possibility of the inferno having been caused by electricity as is always the case.

"Had this accident been caused by an electrical power, then the cash power would have been destroyed first,” said one of them, adding that this would also have brought about a tremendously high destruction around many neighbouring houses.

Apart from the children’s room and some materials inside, the rest of the house was not affected by the incident. The occupant of the house identified as Fifi Kamanzi, said she was at least thankful to God as none of the three children were injured, as she had left them home around 2pm, going to the mass at St. Michel Catholic church in Kigali city.

"But I can’t really understand the cause of this unexpected fire incident,” she lamented.

However, neighbours who witnessed the incident as it started also dismissed the electricity as the possible cause, but suspected an external element of fire that could have been unclearly dropped into the room.

"We only saw smoke going up.... Maybe it was a lightened candle or something of the sort,” said a neighbour’s household help who happened to be around when the fire started.

The horrific incident occurred around 4pm, destroying the children’s bed and its mattress. Some suitcases containing their notebooks and some of their clothes, also caught fire.
