Musanze District vice mayor arrested over spouse assault

Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has confirmed having in custody Augustin Ndabereye, the vice mayor in charge of economic development in Musanze District.

The vice mayor is accused of assaulting his wife on Thursday night, leaving her with multiple bodily injuries over a yet to be known reason, according to accounts from family and neighbors.

The incident took place at the couple’s matrimonial home in a neighborhood Yaounde in Musanze town.

The victim was rushed to Ruhengeri Referral Hospital where she is receiving treatment.

Speaking to The New Times, on Friday, the mayor of Musanze District, Jean-Damascène Habyarimana said he was yet to be briefed on the development, saying he was attending a campaign rally for senatorial candidates.

The investigation bureau had earlier confirmed to have arrested the Musanze District vice mayor saying that he was being detained at Muhoza RIB Station pending further investigation.

"RIB has arrested Augustin Ndabereye, the vice Mayor in charge of Economic development in @MusanzeDistr over an alleged assault of his wife. He is held at Muhoza RIB Station as his case file is being processed,” a tweet from RIB stated.
