MTN Group has launched an internal staff programme aimed at supporting community projects in twenty-one countries where MTN operates in Africa and the Middle East.

And in Rwanda, MTN staff are currently mobilising resources to construct a classroom for a primary school in Kigali. This charity initiative will last for twenty-one days.

"MTN staff will be constructing a 90-square-metre classroom in partnership with Fair Constructions,” Mary Asiimwe, the Human Resource Manager said.

She added: "One hundred and sixty staff members are participating in this act. Each contributed 2.9 per cent depending on one’s salary.”

Frw3.5 million will be used to build a modern classroom with sustainable materials and provide a better studying environment for children.

The activity is part of MTN Group’s charitable programme dubbed ‘21 Days of Y’ello Care’, where MTN staff will donate and participate physically in helping communities.
MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer Themba Khumalo said the company has been involved in different community activities like helping flood victims, paying fees for the needy, planting trees, supporting sports and anti-HIV/Aids campaign.

Khumalo said MTN staff also intend to visit institutions of higher learning for short lectures in different fields of expertise. 

"Here, the company believes bond well with government’s vision of building a stronger human resource base which must be the engine for economic growth,” Khumalo said.
Nozipho January-Bardill, MTN Group Corporate Affairs, said they believe it’s their responsibility to give back to customers and communities that contribute to their success.
