While most teams are busy on the transfer market, business is slow at Sunrise yet the club has said they will be gunning for a top-six finish in the upcoming 2019/2020 Rwanda Premier League.

With just the mere talk of bringing in new – local and foreign – experienced players to beef up their squad, Sunrise’s lack of activity in the transfer window so far says otherwise as far as their target in the new season is concerned.

After nearly three months since the window opened, the Nyagatare-based side has only signed three players; Suleiman Mudeyi from Rayon Sports, Pius Wangi from Ugandan outfit Vipers as well as midfielder Vedaste Niyibizi who rejoined from Police.

Tactician Moses Basena, who joined the club on a two-year deal last month, has vowed to turn Sunrise into ‘one of the best teams’ in the local league, but it cannot be overlooked that the former Uganda national team coach has been inactive for the past nine months.

Basena, who also previously coached Tanzania giants Simba SC, has been without a club since November 2018 when he was fired as SC Villa head coach.

Last season, Sunrise finished in 9th position on the 16-team table with only 33 points out of 30 matches. To date, the club’s best performance remains their fourth position finish during the 2014/2015 season.

Without substantial investments in acquiring new players and good preseason preparations – with friendly matches, the top-six target for the Nyagatare team is so far-fetched.

The new season gets underway on October 4.
