Activities to mark the Silver Jubilee of Rwanda’s liberation continue to be held in various countries, bringing together Rwandans in Diaspora to celebrate the country’s gains since her liberation in 1994.

The celebrations also serve as a moment to reflect on the patriotism of Rwanda Patriotic Army soldiers who, most of them in their youth fought selflessly for the liberation of the country.

On Monday, Rwandan community in Beijing was joined by diplomats, government officials and business operators among other invited guests to celebrate this important day for Rwandans.

Liberation Day is usually observed in the country on July 4, however, the activities still going on in the Diaspora.

According to Rwandan Ambassador to China, Charles Kayonga, liberation period is a time to celebrate the progress registered and reflecting on what should be done for the country to achieve its aspirations in the long run.

"Today, we are celebrating the outcomes of good leadership for its reconciliation process, justice, among others. All of these measures helped the country to strongly combat the consequences of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi,” he noted.

He added that also worth highlighting is the way Rwandans have been liberated from poverty and the ongoing journey to transform the country.

To the young generation, the envoy said that their responsibility is to use the opportunities that the country has provided for them so that they can make valuable contribution in not only consolidating gains made, but also take the country to another level.

Among the audience were students who are pursuing their studies in various institutions of higher learning in China.

"The students should be characterised by Rwandan values. Positive values formed the pillar on which the liberation struggle was fought and won by the young Rwandans who liberated the country. Victory and success depend on courage, discipline, and vision.

They should focus on studies because the country expects much from them. Their potentials are needed to develop the country,” said Kayonga, who was also part of the liberation struggle.

He added that despite all hardships the country is now safe, secure, developed with many opportunities both for Rwandans and foreigners who seek to do business in the country.

Representing Chinese government, Dai Bing, Director General of the Department of African Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulated Rwanda to bring an important influence in Central and Eastern Africa despite its past hardships.

Dai reiterated his government’s commitment to cement the friendship between two countries to ensure stronger community with a shared future.
