Topflight league sides AS Kigali and SC Kiyovu have expressed their intention to merge and form one "stronger” team starting with the 2019/2020 season.

The two clubs, through their presidents, wrote to the City of Kigali – that sponsors both sides – requesting for and explaining the merger on Wednesday.

AS Kigali have the City of Kigali as their main – and sole – sponsors, while SC Kiyovu are sponsored by Nyarugenge District, one of the three districts that make up the City of Kigali.

"After a meeting between executive committees of our two teams, we found it would be a wise move if we merged and formed one stronger team that can win titles and, represent Kigali and the country well in international competitions,” part of the letter states.

This publication understands that the responsible officials in the City Council will sit and look into the request today during which they will approve or reject the move.
