For those who have been closely following Rwanda’s presidential campaigns in recent years, or the Head of State’s citizen outreach programme, the moniker ‘Umukecuru wa Perezida’ is a familiar one.

Daphrose Nyirabahutu, 70, had made a name for herself as the senior citizen that suddenly composes songs at events, largely praising President Paul Kagame and his government’s achievements.

She passed on yesterday, June 18, at the University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB) in Huye District where she had been admitted several days ago.

She was a resident of Raranzige Cell, Rusenge Sector, Nyaruguru District, and a regular face at President Kagame’s rallies in the region.

François Habitegeko, the Nyaruguru Mayor, told The New Times that her artistry will live on.

"I believe that late Daphrose will forever be remembered countrywide for her patriotic messages in her songs, we will be mourning together with her family,” said Habitegeko.

Nyaruguru-born traditional music singer, Intore Masamba, also paid tribute to the late composer and singer.

He said the passing on of Nyirabahutu was a loss for the district and the country.

"She leaves us with sweet memories of her,” he told The New Times on Wednesday.

"I believe our beloved mother went to heaven,” he said, praising her love for her country and compatriots.

"She has been a mother and inspiration to us all,” he eulogised her.

Nyirabahutu passed on after sudden death of her husband a years ago.
