Mount Kenya University on Wednesday handed over a classroom built at a cost of Rwf 15 million to Groupe Scolaire Gahanga 1 in Kicukiro District.

The classroom is to provide learning space to 46 primary pupils.

The handover was done by Simon Gicharu chairman board of trustees Mount Kenya University and was graced by Eugene Mutimura, the minister of education among other officials.

Speaking at the ceremony, Felix Niyitegeka, head teacher, GS Gahanga 1 thanked MKU Rwanda for the gesture, saying that the classroom would help them reduce congestion in classrooms which will improve the quality of education.

"We thank the University for this act of generosity and hope that it will reduce congestion thus improving the quality of education because pupil will have enough learning space,” he said.

Meanwhile, the minister and other guests were also given a tour to other projects of the university (ongoing and done) by Prof Edwin Odhuno, Vice-Chancellor of Mount Kenya University, including Royal FM, the newly constructed hostels and the University academic kitchen for the school of tourism and hospitality.

During the tour, the minister was given access to the state of the art studio of Royal FM where he was hosted live on the afternoon program.

In the studios, the minister was told that the radio currently is only covering mostly Kigali and efforts are being undertaken for it to have a countrywide coverage.

Mutimura also lauded, the administration of the University for the investment, saying that this goes a long way to ensure quality graduates are put on the job market.

Prof Gicharu, in his speech, said that, as Mount Kenya University family, they will continue to work with the government in its transformation journey in areas of socio-economic development.

He highlighted the five-year agreement the University signed with Imbuto Foundation where the University committed USD 150,000.

Vice-Chancellor Odhuno added that the university is also in the transition period to become a fully-fledged technology institution, citing that they are now reviewing the curriculum which will make it become an internationally credited technology higher institution of learning and will change the name to Mount Kenya International University of Technology.
