30 teams set for basketball memorial tournament

A record 30 teams from three countries have confirmed they will participate in this year’s basketball Genocide Memorial Tournament (GMT) slated for June 4-9 in Kigali.

Basketball federations of Kenya, DR Congo, Burundi and hosts Rwanda have confirmed they will be represented at the annual competition. 

Last year, REG clinched the title for the first time after easing past Patriots 73-67 in the final. APR lifted the trophy in the women’s category after edging IPRC-South 63-61. 

"Thirty teams have registered to compete at this year’s tournament. It’s going to be bigger and more competitive than previously,” said Richard Nyirishema, the vice president of FERWABA.

Guest teams (men):PJB (RDC), Terreur (DR Congo), Embakassi Pride (Kenya), and Newstars (Burundi).

Guest teams (women): Promo Jeune Basketball (DR Congo), Berco (Burundi), Les Gazelles (Burundi), Scandinavia (DR Congo). 

Veteran sides (men):Bakolo (DR Congo), Goma Basketball (DR Congo), Champions from Burundi (Burundi), Veteran’s women WBP (Burundi).

Rwandan teams (men): Patriots REG, Espoir and APR, Women: The Hoops, RP IPRC Huye and APR. Veterans Men Espoir, UGB, Patriots, CSK, APR, and Oxygen

Rwandan veteran women: Brave Women Basketball (RWB), Rwanda Energy Group (REG) and Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB).
