Basketball: National team starts preps ahead of AfroCan qualifiers

Serbian tactician Vladimir Bosnjak has named a provisional 14-man squad of the men’s senior national basketball team to start training ahead of the regional qualifiers for the inaugural FIBA AfroCan tournament.

The FIBA Africa Zone V qualifiers are scheduled for June 26 to July 1 in Kampala, Uganda.

Mali has been confirmed as hosts of the first edition of FIBA AfroCan.

AfroCan, equivalent to CHAN tournament in football, is the African Nations Championship that is designed only for players who feature in their domestic leagues.

Bosnjak’s men started non-residential training on Monday at Amahoro Stadium, but they are reporting back to their clubs on Thursday for the upcoming Genocide Memorial Tournament.

Training will resume on June 11, just three weeks before the team jets off to Kampala.

Provisional Squad:

Point guards: Emmanuel Iyakaremye, Ali Kazingufu Kubwimana, Olivier Turatsinze, and Wilson Nshobozwabyosenumukiza.

Shooting guards and small forwards: Pascal Niyonkuru, Fiston Irutingabo, Dieudone Ndizeye, Steven Hagumintwari and Emile Gallois Kazeneza.

Power forwards:Olivier Shyaka and Shaffi Habineza

Centers: Kami Kabange Milambwe, Victor Mutabaruka and Elie Kaje.
