Sogonya confident despite pressure of relegation battle

With the 2018-19 Azam Rwanda Premier League headed into its final stretch, beleaguered Hamis ‘Kishi’ Sogonya is still confident his Kirehe FC side will retain their topflight status come end of the season.

The Kirehe District-sponsored side host Marines at Nyakarambi grounds Wednesday.

Sogonya’s are languishing in 15th place with 20 points, three points behind 14th-placed Gicumbi and five above of bottom side Amagaju. The club that has never been relegated their 2016 promotion from second division league.

"We can still beat relegation. We are in a bad situation, but we will fight to stay up,” said Sogonya who guided AS Kigali (formerly Les Citadins) to the 2001 Peace Cup glory.

Strugglers Kirehe fight for the pivotal three points without suspended Benjamin Ndagijimana, while Marines will miss the services of midfielder Irshad Nsengiyumva, both due to three accumulative yellow cards.

"We still have 18 points to play for and that’s where our survival lies. As always, pressure has to be there from the fans, and that motivates us to deliver.”

After the Marines clash, Kirehe will next visit Etincelles, who face Musanze on Thursday, before taking on Mukura, Sunrise, Rayon Sports and Bugesera, in that order, in their last five fixtures.

Elsewehere on Wednesday, fourth-placed Police delight Sunrise at Kigali Stadium, struggling Amagaju will be up against third-placed Mukura at Nyagisenyi Stadium in the Southern Province derby, while Bugesera go head-to-head with AS Muhanga at Mumena Stadium.
