First Lady Jeannette Kagame on Saturday joined family members and residents of Nyanza District to pay tribute to Queen Rosalie Gicanda, who was killed in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Gicanda, who was wife to King Mutara III Rudahigwa, was the last Queen of Rwanda.

The event was also attended by clerics and other government officials.

Family, friends, Government authorities, as well as  residents of Nyanza District remember and honour Queen Rosalie Gicanda.

The Queen, whose death marked the beginning of the genocide in Butare (now Huye District), perished on this particular day (20 April), during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. She was honoured at a commemoration event that took place at the King's Palace Museum.

The First Lady and other mourners laid a wreath on the final resting place of Queen, where her late husband is also buried.

The resting place for the mornachs is located near the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza town.
