The Canadian Governor General, Julie Payette, arrived in Rwanda Friday evening to take part in the 25th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi, which will be held Sunday.

The visit, according to a statement from the Canadian High Commission to Rwanda, demonstrates Canada’s commitment to preventing genocide and mass atrocities as well as affirms "our relations with Rwanda.”

Among the activities for the Governor General include a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial today, where she will lay a wreath in honour of the victims of the Genocide.

Later on Saturday, she is expected to interract with students at Groupe Scolaire Karama in Nyarugenge District, where she, together with the Canadian delegation "will participate in games that promote learning and life skills.”

On Monday she is scheduled to visit the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Kigali where she will address students at the pan-African institution.

The Governor General of Canada is the federal representative of the Canadian monarch, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
