Two suspected suicide bombers died on Sunday when they attempted to attack a local church in northeastern Nigeria, the police and rescue officials said.

Three suicide bombers were on a mission to attack a local Seminary Church in Gulak area of Adamawa state when the improvised explosive devices on two of the attackers exploded midway, Othman Abubakar, spokesman for the state police, told Xinhua on Sunday adding that the third attacker ran away.

The police suspected the terror group Boko Haram of being responsible for the failed suicide attack. Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, Muhammed Suleiman, said the incident occurred at 8:30 a.m. local time when the church was having its weekly meeting.

No other casualty was recorded from the failed attack, Suleiman said. Boko Haram has been trying since 2009 to establish an Islamist state in northeastern Nigeria, and it is reported that the group has killed some 20,000 people and displaced millions of others.
