The Minister of Internal Security, Musa Fazil Hererimana, yesterday cleared the air on recent reports that the police were entitled to a share of insurance companies’ profits.

The New Times last week quoted the Minister as telling a gathering of police officers, that since they had managed to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents, insurance companies had made huge profits which they should share with the police.

"Many people misunderstood the message I was sending. There is no way we can oblige a company to share its profits with us,” Harerimana told The New Times Friday.

"What I meant was that since the companies were making handsome profits from the good work done by the police, they should consider giving back something. This was just a suggestion and it is not binding,” said the minister.

Insurance companies had been taken aback by the minister’s alleged statement, with the Director General of SONARWA­– the largest insurance company – Corneille Karekezi saying that they had "no contract with the Ministry of Internal Security”
Karekezi is also the president of Rwandan Insurers Association (ASSAR).

New stringent measures taken by the police last year helped reduce the number of traffic accidents drastically.
