Reigning African cyclist of the year Joseph Areruya, and the 2017 Tour du Rwanda champion, is among the pre-race favorites this year. Sam Ngendahimana.

Rwanda Tea has injected Rwf61 million in this year’s Tour du Rwanda in an effort to popularize one of Rwanda’s leading cash crops and a major export.

The tea brand sponsored the country’s biggest sporting event to a tune of Rwf 61,314,000 with 39 per cent of the money coming from Rwanda Tea Association.

On behalf of the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB), George William Kayonga said that the partnership between Rwanda Cycling Federation (Ferwacy) and Rwanda Tea is very essential to take the beverage’s consumption to another level

"This is a good partnership for both parties. The participants will have an opportunity to taste and enjoy the Remarkable Rwanda Tea, touristic attractions and tea plantations on the hillsides given the itinerary of the competition.”

The country’s award-winning tea has chosen to sponsor the competition because it values the importance of sports, especially cycling, given that tea is one of the beverages regarded as a source of strength. Rwanda Tea will reward the best combative rider of each stage.

The 11th edition of Tour du Rwanda starts on Sunday and will conclude on March 3.
