If today was your last day…

I’m not a Leicester City Fan but I’m saddened by club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha’s sudden death, more so after hearing all the nice things he did, not just for the club but the community and even strangers.

Death in general is sad but it’s even harder to cope with unexpected death. Hoping onto that helicopter following home games was routine for Vichai until last Saturday night and now, so many people’s lives will never be the same again. Sadly, life must go on.

Leicester players and business partners have to push on without him. His own family must also deal with his loss. We still don’t know what caused that crash nor the Lion Air Boeing Jet which crashed in Indonesia with 189 people on board.

Tragic events like these get you thinking about your own time. What if today is your last day, what would you do differently, if at all? I’d probably curl up on my bed and cry till I passed away. I’d be too depressed and anxious to do anything else.

Maybe it’s best that nobody knows the day or the hour although with advances in Science and things like euthanasia, some terminally ill patients do know but majority of us don’t.

You just go to bed hoping to wake up in the morning only to die in your sleep! We often pray and ask God to let us see the next day but you may not make it through the day either. I remember when news of Papa Wemba’s death broke two years ago.

He woke up and prepared for a concert only to die later on stage and people were like, "Oh at least he died doing something he loved...” which is true but still, he didn’t get on that stage thinking it would be his last performance.

Unexpected deaths are the worst. You don’t see it coming and so don’t get to "prepare”. I think the main reason we struggle with death is the fact that it’s final. Once you’re dead, you are dead. Only Lazarus and Jesus got lucky! In all seriousness though, I really don’t want to die because I know I will miss life.

We take so many things for granted until we’re no longer able to enjoy them. I can’t imagine not seeing my friends and family ever again. Not being able to check my mail, listen to my favourite music, read a good book, go shopping or simply have a cup of Coffee.

That is what I find depressing. Will Donald Trump win a Second Term in 2020? Which Country will win the next World Cup? Some people will not live long enough to find out. In fact, none of us even know if we will be here tomorrow.

Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream but he never saw Barack Obama elected President, twice. Princess Diana never saw her sons graduate or marry. She’ll never know her grandchildren. That’s what is most painful about death. Not knowing what the future holds!
