Challengers down Telugu Royal to reach cricket league final

Men’s Division 1 cricket fixtures for the Unimoni Premier Cricket League ended with defending champions Challengers defeating Telugu Royals to book a ticket to the final.

Challengers, who won the toss and elected to bat first on Sunday at Gahanga, posted 144/7 in 33 overs.

While bowling, Zappy Bimenyinama, who was named Man of the Match, smashed 5 wickets in 43 runs in 9 overs, while skipper Srinath Vardhinen contributed a wicket 21 runs in 4 overs.

Siraje Nsubuga managed 46 runs off 74 balls with Samal Subhasis scoring 34 runs off 24 balls.

Telugu Royals came short with 143/7 in 33 overs,  Kevin Irakoze hitting 4 wickets 34 runs in 9 balls, while Kumar managed 1 wicket 7 runs in 3 overs. 

 In Division 2 game played on Sunday at Kicukiro Oval,  Sorwathe beat Zonic by 44 runs.

Sorwathe opted to bat first and managed 154/10 in 31 overs and, in reply, Zonic posted 110/10 in 23 overs.

Sorwathe batsman Joshua Mwanja enjoyed the day with 32 runs off 30 balls ending Royals’ chances of qualification. Aime Mucyodusenge contributed 21 runs off 31 balls.

Bowler Theophile Ndayishimiye was the star of Sorwathe as he was instrumental in inflicting defeat on Zonic. He scored 4 wickets 8 runs in 3 overs.

While bowling, Yvan Shema scored 5 wickets 25 runs in 8 overs, and Martin Akayezi also hit 2 wickets 25 runs in 8 overs for Zonic but it was not enough to reach the target.

The final of this year’s Unimoni-Rwanda Cricket Premier League will be played on December 9 at Gahanga Cricket Stadium.
