APR started the defence for their Azam Rwanda Premier League title with an emphatic 2-0 win over Amagaju FC at Kigali Stadium on Friday.

Newly crowned Player of the Year, Muhadjiri Hakizimana, opened the scoring after six minutes to hand the military side an early lead before former Rayon Sports and AS Kigali forward Dominique Savio Nshuti netted the second goal in the 12th minute to seal the victory.

From the start, the 17-time record champions dominated the proceedings and could have scored more goals but Amagaju managed to re-organise their defence to keep off APR forwards as they avoided a more embarrassing start to a new season.

Meanwhile, APR were also handed their 2017/2018 league title on Friday.

The black and white outfit were to collect the trophy at the end of the regular league season in June but the club rather prioritized to focus on their busy calendar in CECAFA Kagame Cup in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and the Peace Cup tournament.

APR dethroned the 2016-17 champions, Rayon Sports, to claim last season’s title with 66 points, five ahead of first runners-up AS Kigali. Rayon finished third while Etincelles completed top four.

Match-day 1 fixtures continue on Sunday with three games on the line-up as newly promoted AS Muhanga host Albert Joel Mphande’s Police FC at Muhanga Stadium, AS Kigali take on Musanze FC at Kigali Stadium and Marines will be up against Bugesera at Umuganda Stadium.

On Saturday, four matches were on the menu but they were yet to get underway by press time.

Among others, Etincelles were supposed to host hopefuls Rayon Sports.

The just started new domestic football season started on Friday and will run through June 2019. During the same period, APR and Mukura will represent the country in CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, respectively.
