Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo has been unanimously elected the Secretary General of Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), an 84-member body that was created in 1970 to promote the French language, peace, and sustainable development.

She was elected at the 17th summit of La Francophonie held in Yerevan the capital of Armenia. She will lead the body for a 4-year term.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the election of Mushikiwabo at the closing ceremony of the summit, which was attended by among other Heads of State, President Paul Kagame.

The win comes after months of a campaign that saw the Rwandan top diplomat visit many countries in Africa and beyond, which are members of La Francophonie.>

Mushikiwabo went to Tunisia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Vietnam, Laos, Niger, Paris, Tchad, Republic du Congo, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, and Cambodia, among others.
