The national U18 women’s beach volleyball team face Aruba today as they begin their medal hunt at the 3rd Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

This year’s edition of the quadrennial Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG), commonly known as the Buenos Aires Youth Olympics, got underway on Saturday and will run through October 18 in the Argentina capital.

The event has attracted around 4,000 athletes from 206 countries.

In the women’s beach volleyball competition, Rwanda have been drawn in Group F alongside Venezuela, Aruba and Mexico. Christophe Mudahinyuka’s ladies will have to finish in the top two to secure a spot in quarter-finals.

While talking to this publication in a telephone interview on Sunday, a confident Mudahinyuka said he anticipates stiff competition in Argentina but his youthful ladies have been prepared accordingly, stressing that the main target is to "advance from the group stage.”

Asked who he thinks is Rwanda’s main challengers, the head coach noted, "All the teams in the group have fought so hard to be there, and there is no one to underestimate.”

Rwanda secured the ticket to the Youth Olympics in July when the duo of Penelope Musabyimana and Valentine Munezero finished second at this year’s African Youth Games in Algeria.
