There was a huge upset in match day 26 of the Primus National League as Etincelles thrashed Rayon Sports 3-1 at Kigali Pele Stadium on Thursday, April 4.

Only a few expected such a stunning result from a lowly ranked side in Etincelles who were struggling for relegation recently.

The Rubavu-based side could now be breathing a sigh of relief with hopes of staying in the topflight league now looking almost guaranteed.

Rayon had all their arsenals on the pitch including the likes of skipper Kevin Muhire, Eric Ngendahimana, Charles Bbaale and Arsene Tuyisenge but it was rather the visitors who looked purposeful from the start of the game.

Gedeon Bendeke, Sadjat Niyonkuru, and Ciiza Hussein took the game in control by the time Julien Mette’s men were yet to get their feet running.

Bbaale, Tuyisenge, and Hadji Iraguha, who were leading Rayon’s attack, created some good chances but they squandered them all to the dismay of the home fans. There were little to no dangerous chances created in either opponent’s field as the teams headed into halftime tied on a barren draw.

After recess, Etincelles started to press Rayon Sports as Radjab Bizumuremyi pushed more men forward as they looked to capitalize on some defending lapses at the back of Rayon.

Bendeka hit a brace in the space of three minutes (52nd and 55th) as Etincelles completely stunned Rayon.

Jordan Nzau made it 3-0 in the 58th minutes to put the game beyond Blues’ reach as they totally looked disjointed in all departments.

Rayon Sports, however, reduced the deficit in the 85th minute through Bbaale but the game ended 3-1 in favor of the visitors.

Rayon are still second on the table with 48 points from 26 games while Etincelles moved to 12th positing with 29 points.
