The Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Associations (FEASSSA) president, Justus Mugisha, has said that without FEASSSA Games in the East African region, sports development would be on a very loose foundation.

Mugisha was speaking Sunday in Musanze District during the opening ceremony of the 2018 edition of the annual games. The multidisciplinary games will run through August 19

"FEASSSA Games in this beautiful city of Musanze are, with no doubt, going to be a massive success, it is always gratifying to host the event in Rwanda. A lot of records will be broken here in the next few days,” Mugisha said.

"These competitions are the heartbeat of sports in the east African region. Without the event, therefore, there can be no sports development in the region.

These games continue to provide the best avenue for young athletes to harness the talent and go on to take it to professional level,” he added.

Last year, FEASSSA Games were held in Gulu, Uganda, while the 2016 edition was staged in Eldoret, Kenya.

Rwanda is hosting the regional post-primary games for a third time after 2007 in Kigali and 2015 in Huye.

In the opening game, BS Kimanya (Uganda) beat CIP Muhanga (Rwanda) 1-0 in boys football.
