The national U18 ladies basketball team will this afternoon take on Egypt in the opening match of the 15th edition of FIBA African U-18 Women’s Championships.

The continental event is hosted at Pavilhao Maxaquene Stadium in Mapouto, Mozambique.

Rwanda is making her first appearance at the biennial showpiece as FIBA Africa Zone V champions after winning this year’s title in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, in June

Charles Mushumba’s team start their quest for first African Championships title against the 2010 champions and two-time silver medalists Egypt following the draws held on Thursday that pitted them in Group A along with Egypt, hosts Mozambique and Cape Verde.

The clash against giants Egypt gets underway at 3:45pm in the tournament’s opening match before the hosts play Cape Verde in the second and last game of the day at 6pm.

The four teams will play each other in a round robin format to determine the best two, who will automatically advance to semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Group B that starts playing on Saturday is led by six-time winners and defending champions Mali, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Champions and the runners-up will secure tickets to the 2019 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup.
