Kiyovu SC eye revenge against Sunrise in dicey encounter
Wednesday, April 03, 2024
Kiyovu SC can't forget the day Sunrise ended their title hopes when they beat them 1-0 last season in Nyagatare. The Green Baggies now think it is time for revenge when the pair face off at Kigali Pele Stadium on Wednesday, April 3-courtesy

Wednesday (3PM)

Kiyovu SC vs Sunrise FC (Kigali Pele Stadium)

Musanze FC vs Gasogi United (Ubworoherane Stadium)

Kiyovu SC welcome struggling Sunrise FC to Kigali Pele Stadium in Wednesday’s Primus National League week 26 encounter looking to make the visitors pay for their role in the club’s title slip up last season.

The Mumena-based side saw their hopes for a first league title in 30 years slip out of their hands following a 1-0 upset at the hands of Sunrise at Nyagatare Stadium on May 21, 2023.

A loss on Wednesday could see the Nyagatare-based side drop into the relegation zone, as long as Bugesera beat Marines FC on Friday, and Kiyovu want nothing but to send their foes into the drop zone which would put them on the brink of relegation.

"Hello Sunrise FC. You remember May 21, 2023? May you come and we give you a reward of the job you did,” the club posted on Wednesday morning.

Sunrise are in difficult times, having picked up just one point out of a possible 15 in their last five games but against Kiyovu, it has is always a different game.

The Green Baggies hold a better record from the pair's past 14 meetings since 2016, having won five against Sunrise’s four while five other games ended in a draw.

Kiyovu's current form has also been about ups and downs. In their last five league games, they have won two, drawn one, and lost twice.

During the 2022/23 season, it was only Sunrise FC who picked six points from Kiyovu. They beat them 2-1 in Kigali on October 10, 22 and also 1-0 at Nyagatare on May 21, 2023 a result which ended the Green Baggies title dreams.

With Sunrise languishing around the drop zone, Kiyovu may feel this is the right time to use all their energy to send their nemesis further down the league table.

Kiyovu will rely on the likes of Fred Muhozi and winger Richard Kilongozi to propel them to victory while Yafesi Mubiru remains Sunrise’s main man upfront. It was Ugandan attacker’s lone goal that shocked Kiyovu last season.

Elsewhere, at Ubworoherane Stadium, Musanze FC will be hoping to recover from their 3-1 loss to Kiyovu over the weekend in time to beat Gasogi United.
