Inyambo Parade Festival is a three-day cultural event slated for March 22 to 24 in Nyanza District. The event is a celebration of the rich heritage of Rwandan culture, where traditions harmonize with modernity.

The debut edition aims at forging a deep connection with the country’s heritage, propelling the preservation of time-honored customs, energizing the local economy, offering stunning entertainment, and spotlighting Nyanza’s various tourism potentials.

The festival will feature Inyambo cows, long-horned royal cattle that stand as one of Rwanda’s most distinctive treasures, embodying a legacy deeply connected with the nation’s history and cultural identity.

They are considered Rwanda’s most unique treasure and represent more than just livestock – they symbolize pre-colonial ways of selective breeding, a sign to the ancient science pursued by Rwandans in their quest for superior cattle. an enduring symbol of the wisdom of the ancient Rwandan people in selective breeding and their firm pursuit of unique cattle.

The Inyambo, or the long-horned royal cows, have traditionally been paraded for and by Rwandan kings, presented to esteemed chiefs, and presented before other honored guests. The old-age tradition is set to continue as these regal creatures are elegantly paraded before visiting heads of state, distinguished guests, and friends of Rwanda, preserving a legacy of cultural significance and ancestral reverence.

Why the Inyambo parade?

According to Erasme Ntazinda, Mayor of Nyanza District, the main objective of the ‘Inyambo Parade’ is the revitalization of culture in Rwanda.

"This is a multifaceted event that will involve embracing the nation’s rich heritage, fostering community engagement, and promoting cultural expression in various forms. As part of this holistic approach, it is essential to recognize the significance of cultural events,” he said.

He noted: "Celebrating traditions, connecting communities, and preserving the collective memory of the nation by actively participating in and supporting these cultural gatherings, Rwandans can strengthen their cultural identity and contribute to the ongoing revival of their heritage.”

"Besides, it will educate and promote preservation of cultural heritage, increase visibility of Nyanza’s tourism products and generate economic gains,” he added.

Key features

The Inyambo Parade Festival will unfold across three distinct heritage sites, each selected for its cultural significance.

Among these venues are the 'Kwigira Museum', which will serve as the primary hub for activities related to the Inyambo’s importance. The site will also feature information about the ‘Girinka' project and its significance, among others

At the King's Palace Museum, visitors will explore exhibitions and activities centered around the cow’s value chain, as well as enjoy the ‘Igitaramo’ night cultural entertainment among others.

At the New Nyanza Tourism Information Center, housed within the historic premises of the old Kings Court, exhibitions and activities will focus on celebrating and preserving culture and heritage, highlighting their crucial contributions to tourism and the local economy.
