It is going to be a clash of the titans as former topseed Dieudonné Habiyambere face Hamisi Gatete on Saturday in the final of this year’s Genocide Memorial Tennis Tournament.

Gatete, who is playing his first final in any tournament in the last three years, knocked out Etienne Niyigena 6-3, 6-4 in the last four yesterday whereas veteran Dieudonné Habiyambere sent Ernest Habiyambere packing in two sets – 6-3, 6-4 – another semi-final clash.

In the women’s fray, it’s a rematch of the 2017 final as holder Nancy Onya from DR Congo take on Rwanda’s topseed Megame Ingabire.

The 2016 winner Ingabire reached the final after beating Chantal Mutuyimana in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in semi-finals on Friday while Onya also ousted Gisele Umumararungu in two sets; 6-2-63 respectively.

The week-long tourney is part of memorial events organized by sporting federations every year in honour of sportsmen and women that were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

This year’s tennis memorial tournament which started on June 8, attracted a record 136 players from DR Congo and the hosts Rwanda – competing in both amateur and professional categories.
