Police in Gasabo District have arrested three men in connection with stealing 12 computers from Nduba Secondary School.

The computers were stolen when thieves broke into the computer school’s laboratory in the night of April 27.

Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu says that the three suspects (names withheld) are currently detained at Nduba Police Station as their case has been taken up by Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB).

"The following morning after the theft, some people called the school administration informing them of the robbery but the callers deliberately refused to identify themselves,” said Hitayezu.

He added: "The two school guards (among those arrested) also later informed the school administration of the theft and yet there were no break-in. It appeared the door had been opened either with an authentic key or forged one.

"Preliminary investigations conducted by RIB later established that that the duo worked with the school cook to steal the computers and that’s when the Police came in and arrested the trio.”

The suspects exploited the heavy downpour on the night of April 27, and used it as cover to transport the computers without being noticed, said the police publicist.

"These computers are meant to facilitate Rwandan children develop their knowledge and skills, and to be competent people tomorrow. Stealing them does not only just affect the children, but also the nation. That is why it requires collective efforts to fight such crimes,” he said.

He also called upon the public to desist from buying things including electronics from the black market to avoid buying stolen goods, and to always report people they suspect to be thieves or selling stolen property.

Article 300 of the Penal Code stipulates that, any person who commits theft without violence or threats shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.
