The bus belonging to public transporter, Rwanda Interlink Transport Company (RITCO), caught fire Friday morning along the Musanze-Kigali highway.

The accident, which occurred around 8am, took place in Kivuruga, Gakenke District.

The bus was heading to Kigali from Musanze District and it had on board 51 passengers.

All the passengers managed to get out of the bus unhurt, according to Chief Inspector of Police Hamdun Twizeyimana, police spokesperson for Northern Region.

"People near the road realised that the bus had fire sparks from the lower part of the vehicle and immediately alerted the driver in time. All passengers managed to disembark with their luggage before the fire engulfed the entire bus,” he said.

Twizeyimana said that the cause of the accident is still unknown, adding that they had launched an investigation to get to the bottom of it.

By around 10am, police firefighters had managed to contain the fire but much of the bus had been gutted.
