The National U20 team has qualified for the second round of the 2019 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after holding Kenya’s Rising Stars to a 0-0 draw at Kigali Stadium yesterday.

Rwanda progressed on the away goals rule and will now face defending champions Zambia in the second round next month.

There were very few chances in the match as Lague Byiringiro missed the only two opportunities he had in either half of the match. Kenya’s Bogarde Cyitegetse also failed to hit the back of the net in the 70th minute.

"The game was tough but we are happy to qualify for the next round. We didn’t play our usual game which is a disappointment although the team did well to resist pressure from the Kenyans in the latter stages,” Junior Wasps head coach Vincent Mashami said.

The final qualifying round will be staged in July with the winner earning automatic slots to next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations.

Zambia are the defending champions after winning the 2017 finals edition in Lusaka.

The Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations is the main international youth football competition for CAF, and is competed for by under 20 year-olds. It is held every two years with the top 4 teams qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
