Police in Nyabihu District are holding two people who were intercepted as the trafficked 420 kilogrammes of cannabis.

The duo was arrested following a tip off from a commercial motorcyclist who had been hired for "road surveillance” by the traffickers during the act.

According to the Western Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the drugs had been concealed in a Toyota RAV 4 with registration numbers RAD 406G which has since been impounded.

The suspects (names withheld) are a man and woman.

The spokesperson said police acting on a tip-off from the motorcyclist that drugs were being transported in the mentioned vehicle, quickly mounted a road check point to arrest the suspects.

He said the motorcyclist had been hired to move ahead of the suspects to look out for any possible police deployment which he would communicate back to the suspects.

"The same motorcyclist is the one that tipped off police and the suspects who were driving from Rubavu to Musanze district were intercepted around Mukamira in Nyabihu District,” said Gasasira.

Gasasira commended the role of the general public in the fight against drugs in the country, and the ongoing efforts to break chains of supply through real time information sharing.

"We have mapped major routes and we are working well with the residents to ensure that all those involved in drug related crimes are arrested,” said Gasasira.
