Sunday, April 15, 2018

Long distance runner Alexis Nizeyimana will race in the men’s full-marathon this morning at the XXI Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The 27 year- old is Rwanda’s sole representative in the 42km race, which will be contested by 25 athletes from 14 different countries.

Nizeyimana told Sunday Sport that he has been training well since arriving in Gold Coast on April 6 and "feels fit”.

At the 20th edition of Commonwealth Games in 2014, Rwanda had two marathoners Dieudonne Didi and Jean Mvuyekure. Disi finished in 18th place while compatriot Mvuyekure came in 21st place.

So far none of the Rwandan athletes at the Commonwealth Games has managed to win a medal. Nizeyimana is the country’s remaining hope as the Games come to a close today.

To win a medal, Nizeyimana will have to overcome stiff challenge from Kenya’s trio of Julius Karinga, Kenneth Mungara and Nicholas Kamakya as well as Uganda’s Alex Chesakit, Munyo Mutai and Robert Chemonges among others.

The XXI Gold Coast Commonwealth Games started on April 4 and will be concluding today. The two-week long event attracted over 6,600 athletes from 71 nations and territories, competing in eighteen sports and seven para-sports.
