Rwandan powerlifting coach Jean-Paul Nsengiyumva who traveled with the country’s contingent to the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Australia has gone missing, it has emerged.
Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chief executive David Grevemberg confirmed the development Thursday.
Grevemberg said Nsengiyumva along with two Ugandans and a Ghanaian, went missing and that the Police had been alerted.
Nzengiyumva was a coach to Paralympian Vedaste Niyonzima.
"Police and other relevant authorities have been informed,” Grevemberg said.
Sports minister Julienne Uwacu warned members of the Rwandan delegation during a send-off ceremony against abusing the terms of their visas by vanishing from the Games.
"It’s a dishonorable act that does not fit with our values, we expect you to return after the Games,” Uwacu told the Rwandan delegation ahead of their departure to the Games.
Last year, a member of the Rwandan para-taekwondo team, Eliezer Tuyishime, went missing from the 2017 para-taekwondo championship village in London, UK and did not return home after the competition.
Times Sport could not readily reach the head of the Rwandan delegation, Eugene Nzabariterura, for a comment.
Earlier organizers said eight Cameroonians had also vanished from the Games village. This prompted Cameroon authorities to recall their delegation from the competition.
Australian Police said they will only follow up on the missing athletes after their visas expire on May 15.
