Dear teachers, October 5, will be an international day for teachers. The day commemorates the signing of the UNESCO/ILO on 5 October 1966 when recommendations concerning the status of teachers were highlighted.

More than 100 countries currently celebrate World Teachers’ Day marked on 5 October. World Teachers’ Day provides the opportunity to draw public attention to the important role of teachers in society. The basic message that a teacher needs to receive is quite simple.

"We commend you for your effort and role.” You teach: educate; give instructions or lessons; cause to learn and to understand; inspire; inculcate knowledge; help and guide someone; develop children academically, socially and emotionally; aid someone in self-improvement; in short - you open doors to a better world.

World Teachers’ Day reminds governments and the general public of the role teachers play and of the need to improve their status and working conditions. Above all, it is an opportunity to show appreciation for their work in preparing the next generation to function efficiently in a changing world.

The world we leave to our children depends in large measure on the children we leave to our world. Teachers have a pivotal role in realizing the goal.

Many of our hopes for a more socially just, more sustainable, more tolerant and more peaceful world rest on the shoulders of the teachers.
