Officials launch the national antenatal care guidelines in Kigali on September 30.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Health, Rwanda Biomedical Centre, WHO, UNFPA and other civil society organisations converged at the Kigali Convention Centre last week on Friday, September 30, where they officially launched the new WHO antenatal care model. The new model recommends expectant mothers to have at least eight antenatal contacts with their healthcare providers within the course of their pregnancy.

The guidelines, replace those also by WHO, that were introduced in 2016 that recommended at least four visits. We take you through the events of the high-attended day through the lenses.

The new guidelines, also by the World Health Organisation (WHO), replace those introduced in 2016 that initially recommended at least four visits.
The guidelines, which were tailored to the Rwandan context, will respond to identified areas of antenatal care that are critical to saving lives, improving quality of care.

The UNFPA Adolescent and Youth Unit Team Leader, Therese Karugwiza reminded that over 600 women die from pregnancy or delivery related complications while around 5,700 new-born children die every year in Rwanda.
