Jean Baptiste Kayiranga, who has previously coached Rayon Sports and Amavubi, has been appointed the women national team head coach. Sam Ngendahimana.

Former Rayon Sports head coach Jean Baptiste Kayiranga has been appointed head coach of the national women team ‘She-Amavubi’ ahead of the CECAFA Women Challenge Cup due in Kigali in May.

The CECAFA Women Challenge Cup will be held in Kigali from May 12-20 at Kigali Stadium.

Kayiranga replaced former AS Kigali women club head coach Grace Nyinawumuntu who was in charge from 2014 to 2016.

FERWAFA Communications manager Bonnie Mugabe told Times Sport that the Executive Committee of Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) had approved both the composition of the technical team of the national women football team and members of the local organising committee for the upcoming tournament.

"The technical committee will meet with the management of FERWAFA before the end of this week to lay out a clear plan of how the selection process and preparations of the national women’s team will be conducted to ensure that Rwanda is represented well at next month’s tournament,” Mugabe said.

The tournament will attract eight countries which will be pooled in two groups of four teams each. The participating nations include; hosts Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and Djibouti.

However, Eritrea, Burundi, Zanzibar and South Sudan are yet to confirm their participation. The CECAFA women tournament, which will be funded by FIFA, was revived last year. Uganda hosted the 2016 edition during which Rwanda fared poorly after failing to go past the group stage.
